Balbir happily played second (Ra)fiddle

In the Golden Era, the soundtracks of several Hindi films featured qawwalis, and despite the fact that more often than not, the Sufi spiritual song was interpreted by the composers, they didn’t eschew the tradition associated with the genre, impressing both the purists and those who preferred modernisation.

And that is precisely what Dattaram Naik (a.k.a. N Dutta) did when he composed Aaj Kyon Humse Parda Hai from Sadhna, which released in 1958.

The track was penned by Sahir Ludhianvi.

It was rendered by Mohammed Rafi, who was joined behind the microphone by S Balbir.
